In this three-hour (pH Shifting workshop), adult students learned how to shift the pink tones to reds or purples by altering the acidity (adding lemon or cream of tartar) or alkalinity. Initially transforming avocado seeds into vibrant shades of pink and red and moving onto cochineal (grana cochinilla.) Sponsored by FreshThyme, the session took place in the library’s fully equipped kitchen, where each participant had access to their own induction burner.  At the beginning of the workshop, we emphasized the importance of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). When working with natural materials, participants are required to wear gloves, masks, goggles, and aprons. This is essential because the process can release fumes that may be harmful to the eyes, skin, and lungs. Additionally, we handle tannins and mordants, which can pose risks depending on individual sensitivities or allergic reactions. The workshop also offered insight into traditional practices from Mexico, exploring the natural sources behind some of the country’s most vibrant colors—techniques rooted in methods used since ancient times.
